[1] Objectives

  • English Education Majors: This program aims to strengthen the theoretical foundation and professional expertise of in-service and prospective English teachers who hold teacher certification and to prepare English education professionals with academic research competence.
  • Non-English Education Majors: This program is designed for students who did not major in English education or an English-related field at the undergraduate level but wish to become English education professionals. It aims to prepare researchers with broad knowledge of English education and related fields, as well as the ability to conduct academic research.
  • Full-time students in the Graduate School: Full scholarship provided.
  • The master’s program in English Education in the Graduate School is a research-oriented program that provides broad theoretical knowledge in English education, English linguistics, applied linguistics, and English literature. In contrast, the Graduate School of Education is designed primarily for obtaining the Grade II secondary school English teacher certification and for the professional development of in-service teachers.
  • For the master’s and doctoral programs in the Graduate School, a degree thesis is required.

[2] Eligibility

  1. 01Applicants who have graduated or are expected to graduate from a department related to English Education
  2. 02Applicants who have graduated or are expected to graduate from a department not directly related to English Education but wish to pursue a major related to English education, English literature, or English linguistics. However, an evaluation may be conducted during the interview process to assess the applicant’s ability to pursue academic study in English.

[3] Credits Required for Completion: At least 24 credits in total (3 credits in seminar courses, at least 3 credits in common required courses, and at least 9 credits in major elective courses)

[4] Comprehensive Examination

  1. 01Eligibility: Students who have earned at least 18 credits and received a recommendation from their academic advisor.
  2. 02Application Period: March for the first semester and September for the second semester. Please refer to the academic calendar for the comprehensive examination schedule each academic year.
  3. 03Application Method: Apply through the Integrated Academic Information System.
  4. 04Comprehensive Examination Subjects: The Comprehensive Examination Committee, consisting of three members including the academic advisor, prepares examination questions related to the student’s thesis field.
  5. 05Passing Criteria: A score of 70 or higher out of 100 in each subject.

[5] English Proficiency Requirement

Students must meet one of the following English proficiency requirements to obtain a master’s degree: TOEIC 800, TOEFL iBT 91, TEPS 640, or IELTS 6.0 or higher.

[6] Thesis Presentation

  1. 01Students presenting their degree thesis must submit the complete thesis at least two weeks before the thesis presentation date.
  2. 02Presenters are confirmed no later than one week before the presentation after thesis review. Approval by a majority of the Department Thesis Committee is required.
  3. 03The thesis presentation is held in the presence of graduate students in the master’s and doctoral programs and department faculty members, including the student’s academic advisor.

[7] Eligibility Requirements for Thesis Submission

  1. 01Completion of the required credits for the master’s program curriculum: 24 credits
  2. 02Passing the comprehensive examination and the foreign language examination
  3. 03At least one presentation, including a poster presentation, at a domestic or international academic conference in a field related to the major before graduation from the master’s program

[8] Degree Thesis and Alternative Achievement Requirements

  1. 02Alternative achievement requirements in lieu of a degree thesis
    Academic journals in domestic or international fields related to the major: Students must publish an article of a regular article type recognized by the National Research Foundation of Korea in one of the following types of journals: a journal indexed in SCI, SCIE, SSCI, A&HCI, or SCOPUS, or a journal registered with the National Research Foundation of Korea. General academic journals not included in these categories are not recognized.
