[1] Objectives

This program aims to prepare English education professionals who have the ability to conduct independent research and pursue careers at universities or research institutes related to English education.

For the master’s and doctoral programs in the Graduate School, a degree thesis/dissertation is required.

[2] Eligibility

  1. 01Applicants who have obtained or are expected to obtain a bachelor’s or master’s degree in a field related to English Education.
  2. 02Applicants who have obtained or are expected to obtain a bachelor’s or master’s degree in a field not directly related to English Education but wish to pursue a major related to English education, English literature, or English linguistics. However, an evaluation may be conducted during the interview process to assess the applicant’s ability to pursue academic study in English.

[3] Credits Required for Completion: At least 36 credits in total (3 credits in seminar courses, at least 3 credits in common courses, and at least 15 credits in major elective courses)

[4] Comprehensive Examination

  1. 01Eligibility: Students may take the comprehensive examination beginning in the semester in which they register for the credits required to complete the doctoral program.
  2. 02Application Period: March for the first semester and September for the second semester. Please refer to the academic calendar for the comprehensive examination schedule each academic year.
  3. 03Application Method: Apply through the Integrated Academic Information System.
  4. 04Comprehensive Examination Subjects: The Comprehensive Examination Committee, consisting of three members including the academic advisor, prepares examination questions related to the student’s dissertation field.
  5. 05Passing Criteria: A score of 70 or higher out of 100 in each subject.

[5] English Proficiency Requirement

Students must meet one of the following English proficiency requirements to obtain a doctoral degree: TOEIC 830, TOEFL iBT 95, TEPS 670, or IELTS 6.5 or higher.

[6] Dissertation Proposal Presentation

  1. 01Students must give a dissertation proposal presentation no later than the semester immediately preceding the semester in which they present their degree dissertation.
  2. 02The dissertation proposal presentation must include the dissertation title, dissertation outline, and research schedule.
  3. 03In the semester in which the dissertation proposal presentation is held, students must submit a dissertation presentation plan to the department chair.
  4. 04The proposal presentation is held in the presence of graduate students in the master’s and doctoral programs and department faculty members, including the student’s academic advisor.

[7] Eligibility Requirements for Dissertation Submission

  1. 01Completion of the required credits for the doctoral program curriculum: 36 credits.
  2. 02Submission of an official English proficiency test score: TOEIC 830 or higher.
  3. 03Completion of the dissertation proposal presentation after passing the comprehensive examination.
  4. 04After admission to the Graduate School and before graduation, students must publish at least two articles in domestic or international academic journals in a field related to the major, with no more than two authors per article. When publishing in an academic journal, students are encouraged to submit the article as a joint study with their academic advisor. [Students must be the lead author, either first author or corresponding author, of the published articles. This follows the department regulation meeting held on April 14, 2020.]
  5. 05Domestic or international academic journals in fields related to the major: Students must publish articles, either in Korean or English, as regular article types recognized by the National Research Foundation of Korea in one of the following types of journals.

  • 1. Journals indexed in SCI, SCIE, SSCI, A&HCI, or SCOPUS.
  • 2. Journals registered with the National Research Foundation of Korea, including KCI-indexed journals.

However, among the two or more published articles, at least one must be published in a journal indexed as a KCI journal or higher by the National Research Foundation of Korea.
