The College pursues talented people with insight to be able to see through the times.
The College of Humanities cultivates a holistic intellectual having professional knowledge about society and human beings.
It aims at fostering professional people of ability to have knowledge, insight, creative thinking, and an inquisitive spirit about human beings and act positively for the change of times.
Eleven departments are set for the students to study humanities dealing with the fundamental truth and value of human beings and the world including language, history, and philosophy. The humanities we pursue are to communicate with society, reflect the culture, and go with the world.

Department of English Language and Literature

Those studying the English language, with it being an essential tool for global communication, may get one of the leading roles in the rapidly changing times, which require excellent and full communication skills. Curricula of the Department consist of several subjects of English literature and others to improve the communication ability in the English language. English linguistics is one of the linguistics studies that scientifically research the essential characteristic of a language in its sound, vocabulary, sentence structure, and meaning in various aspects. English literature looks into human life through poems, novels, plays and criticisms written in English, expressing and considering the essence of human beings. The students may get high-level global communication competency and the ability to understand the culture of the English-speaking world when they complete the practical course of English study, in addition to a deep and diversified ability to think based on the essential understanding of the people. They may advance into various circles of society, which requires such knowledge and ability as above.

Department of English

The study of the English language is a discipline that deals with an overall knowledge of English and involves a curriculum that addresses the four major functions of the language: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. It should also provide the necessary knowledge to prepare individuals in both human relations and the industrial arena to use the world's official language as a member of the international community. Literature and linguistic texts in English as well as applied studies in English education and practical English skills are complex fields, and an extensive organization with various academic fields such as English linguistics, pedagogy, psychology, and cultural anthropology must be taken into consideration

Department of Korean Language and Literature

It was established to study and develop Korean language and literature. It encourages students to enhance their understanding of themselves and the world through a thoughtful study of our language and literature.
They may proceed to graduate school at home or abroad after graduating from the department, and they may become a school teacher, public official, novelist, poet, broadcasting writer or find employment in news media or publishing companies.

Department of German Language and Literature

The Department of German Language and Literature imparts professional knowledge about German literature and culture in order to empower students to meet various cultural needs in contemporary society. Based on their proficiency in German, students will be able to translate and interpret from German and thereby take part in the shaping of globalization.
Within the specific curriculum of our major, our department teaches a large variety of courses for a deeper understanding of German culture, with the additional option of completing the requirements for teaching qualifications.
To help students prepare for their major and improve their proficiency in German, our department provides multimedia teaching materials, and possesses a large variety of reference works and essential reading materials.
Furthermore, we have signed exchange agreements with Leipzig University and Hamburg University in Germany to provide opportunities for practice and language training.
In addition, we invite well-known professors from Germany to give lectures fostering students’ enthusiasm for their area of studies.
Finally, our department supports conversation, interpretation, and translation activities by the department’s Student Council.

Department of Russian Studies

Established in 1991, Department of Russian Studies offers various classes aimed at helping students achieve academic and professional goals including a good proficiency in Russian language. Our department also offers the BA and MA degrees. Our faculty strengths include literature, culture, linguistics, history and economics. So, students have an opportunity to take a variety of courses about Russia and Eurasia. Our department has several international exchange programs with universities in Russia and Central Asia. Students have a chance to study at our international partner universities through student exchange program. Exchange students are selected each year, and the duration of the program is either one semester or one year. Graduates can choose diverse and broad careers, such as civil servants, a tour translating guide, interpreter, translator, medical tour coordinator, social worker and an employee of various companies.

Department of Folk Dance

Gyeongsang National University, the largest national university in Gyeongsangnam-do Province, located in Jinju, is a town of arts and dance, and its Department of Folk Dance is the first of its kind specializing in Korean folk dance study, established according to the requirements of an educational society demanding specialization and professionalism. The Department places importance on having close connections with other colleges and departments studying foreign folk dance and actively supports its students to study dance abroad through training programs. It contributes to the development of Korean culture and arts through academic and artistic exchange as well as an enhancement of international competitiveness.

Department of French Language and Literature

The Department tries to foster the students to become proficient in speaking French and obtain a rich knowledge about French culture to be a global talent in the area. It provides various subjects on French literature, arts and culture for them to understand the diversified French culture by enhancing their French speaking and understanding proficiency.
Basic French grammar and conversation classes are arranged for the lowerclassmen, along with an introduction to French culture and literature. Upperclassmen attend classes to deepen their French speaking ability, as well as study French poetry, stories, and plays to better understand the culture and arts. In addition, they learn about the society, culture and arts of other Francophone countries, such as some African countries and Canada.

Department of History

The Department classifies human history into Korean history, Eastern history, and Western history in order to educate the students in understanding history more systematically, by comparing and reviewing it in several aspects. Accordingly, they are inspired to possess the correct sense of history so that they can contribute to social development and cultural creation. After graduation, students can advance into various fields of society, such as teachers, journalists, publishers, research institute fellows, and museum curators.

Department of Chinese Language and Literature

The Department is fostering talented students who will be engaged in the study of Chinese literature as a humanities sciencein the midst of times when the relationship between South Korea and China is becoming increasingly important. In particular, the Department concentrates on teaching diversified knowledge and language through Chinese culture, language studies, and conversation. Through international exchange with its sister college in China, it is possible for the students to directly experience the reality of China. After graduation, it is possible to advance into various fields, such as Chinese relations specialists, teachers, public officials, journalists, or traders in trading companies as well as seek admission to graduate schools.

Department of Philosophy

Philosophy is a discipline that pursues the perfection of wisdom. To this end, we want to liberate reason from errors and prejudices through cognitive criticism and an understanding of existence. Cognitive criticism is arranged based on scientific knowledge, while the understanding of existence is the basis for forming new values. The systematic pursuit of knowledge or Wissenschaft started from philosophy, but it was separated from philosophy after modern times. Thus, philosophy is at the forefront of pure learning along with human history.

Department of Korean Literature in Classical Chinese 

In order to cultivate the correct values, morality and humanity, Gyeongsang National University offers a systematic curriculum of Korean Literature in Classical Chinese as a whole.Through Confucian classics, field trips, and history books, students can learn about Korean traditional culture and ideas.
After graduation, students are expected to become chinese character teachers, translators of Korean Classics, and researchers majoring in Korean Literature in Classical Chinese.
