College of Marine Sciences

As the birthplace of Korea’s fisheries and marine sciences education, Gyeongsang National University’s College of Marine Sciences has been making continuous efforts to nurture talented experts in the fields of marine fisheries and engineering since its establishment in 1917.

The College has 56 professors in 12 departments and 80 faculty members act as support personnel to serve 1,036 undergraduate students and 112 students in the master’s and doctoral degree courses at the graduate school. In particular, the size of the graduate school is large with a high application rate for admission.

The College operates the Marine Science Library for education and research support. and the student dormitory can accommodate 500 students who want to stay there. In addition, the College has various indoor and outdoor sports facilities such as a gym, a fitness center, a soccer field, and a book café for all students, professors and personnel.

As the only national university in Tongyeong, Gyeongsang National University plays a central role in the maritime and fisheries industry and high-tech industry in the southern coast of Korea encompassing Geoje and Changwon.

Members of the College are doing their best to foster global talents and develop Korea’s university education.

Department of Maritime and Fisheries Management

The Department aims at fostering professional managers in marine fishery and general industries. A systematic education including finance, accounting, production, international management, marketing, and human resource management is provided by the Department for students to develop their skills as professional managers. In particular, the Department is specialized in the fishery field, offering lectures on fishery management, fishery economics, and aquatic product distribution for students for learn theory-centered practical management skills in the field and in practical affairs.

Department of Future Industry Convergence

The Department offers a customized curriculum that allows students to combine work and degree acquisition without a scholastic achievement test score. It operates special evening and weekend courses for office workers.

The Department offers the latest studies of convergence related to marine industry, which is the growth engine of the 21st century, in the areas of marine resources, offshore energy, environment, food, shipbuilding, ocean transporting equipment, ship operation, information communication, and business management. It aims at fostering creative and practical experts having international business minds through systematic education and practical experience.

Department of Aquatic Life Medicine(New in 2024)

The Department of Aquatic Life Medicine focuses on educating about the health management and diseases of diverse aquatic organisms. The curriculum covers a wide range of topics, including medical, pathological, diagnostic, and infectious aspects of microorganisms, parasites, viruses, and the aquatic environment. The program also delves into the health of aquatic animals through foundational studies in anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, histology, immunology, as well as food hygiene and public health, all of which contribute to the safe production of fisheries.

Our department is dedicated to cultivating individuals capable of making significant contributions to the well-being of aquatic animals and enhancing public health. By blending theoretical knowledge with practical applications, we aim to produce graduates who can effectively address various challenges. The ultimate goal is to cultivate skilled professionals in aquatic disease management, preparing them for the nationally licensed position of 'Aqua Medicine Biologist' which has been in effect since 2004.

Department of Maritime Police System

The Department teaches courses related to ship and maritime safety as well as related various legal courses. It aims at fostering students of expertise who can protect the maritime territory of the Republic of Korea, manage and supervise the safety and order of the sea in the midst of fierce competition in the world’s oceans. Upon graduation, the students serve in areas such as the maritime police, navy, fishery control, and fisheries and marine-related areas of local governments.

Department of Marine Biology and Aquaculture

The Department offers courses in basic sciences such as physiology and ecology related to the vital phenomena of marine organisms, as well as life sciences such as genetic engineering and breeding, marine biomedicine, and applied studies related to mass cultivation and management of marine biological resources. In addition, the Department investigates diversified uses and functions of acquatic biological resources. It also develops and industrializes technologies using advanced techniques and high value-added pharmaceuticals through the discovery of natural substances (fodder additives, fish vaccines, antibacterial peptides, etc.) in order to foster the human resources required for the development of cutting-edge aquaculture and life industry.

Department of Mechanical and Systems Engineering

The Department fosters advanced technical personnel in specialized fields such as transportation machinery, shipbuilding and marine equipment, ship engines, and offshore structures. The main industry of Gyeongsangnam-do Province is the machinery industry, and shipyards, machinery and equipment-related companies are concentrated in the southern coastal area of the peninsula. Accordingly, the importance of the Department at Gyeongsang National University located in Tongyeong is widely recognized. The Department carried out the Project to Cultivate Local Colleges (called Project BK21) for seven years from 2000, and it was selected as the department to have successfully supervised Project NURI (project to foster innovative technical manpower for cutting-edge mechanical industry). In addition, an academic-industry collaboration system has been established through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for curriculum and internship employment with a nearby large shipyard that enables students to find employment immediately after graduation.

Smart Energy and Mechanical Engineering

The Department aims to foster creative mechanical engineers who can adapt to the rapidly changing field by integrating IT technology with the mechanical sector. Based on basic theoretical education, it operates a professional track to give lessons linked with the industries concerned so that students can use their knowledge in the field. The four-year training course includes PLM solution training, 3D printer training, electrical/electronic training, condition monitoring, and predictive diagnosis training.

Department of Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering

The Department is located at the center of shipbuilding and marine industry, and it offers a curriculum focused on on-site practical training including practical technical training required for employment. The Department is at the center of Korean shipbuilding, offshore industries, and large shipyards, such as Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering, Samsung Heavy Industries, HSG Sungdong Shipbuilding, and STX Offshore & Shipbuilding. It operates training courses that can be applied to field practices to foster field experts required by the industries concerned.

To cultivate professional technical manpower in shipbuilding and marine engineering, the curricula of the Department are set according to the technical demands of large shipbuilding yards. Also included in the curricula is practical technical education required for finding employment in small and medium shipbuilding industries, and equipment and material producing companies for shipbuilding and offshore works.

Department of seafood and Technology

The Department investigates diversified availability and functionality of aquatic biological resources, develops high-functional food processing technology using advanced techniques, creates new products, promotes the standardization and industrialization of traditional aquatic products, along with developing and using high value-added pharmaceuticals and new biomaterials through a search for biologically active natural substances. In this regard, the Department aims at fostering competent human resources who can develop studies on using fishery products in relevant industries and further make contributions to solving future food problems and promoting human health and welfare.

Department of Marine Civil Engineering

The Department strives to foster future marine civil engineers engaged in marine construction. The ocean, which occupies two-thirds of the earth, is the last hope for the future of mankind. The world is concentrating on developing the ocean, expanding the territories by building offshore artificial islands and offshore airports. Many countries intensify their power in building large-scale offshore construction positively to secure future resources including energy plants and resource extraction systems. The Department fosters experts who will be responsible for future offshore construction in Korea.

Department of Marine Environment Engineering

The Department deals with increasingly serious marine environmental issues and sets its goal to foster creative and dynamic professional engineers who will lead the future environmental industry. It built an industry-university-industrial cooperative research system to cope with marine environmental issues and to carry out on-the-ground, prompt, and lasting research studying the characteristics of marine pollution to make permanent contributions in solving marine environmental pollution problems.
