Let the modern education rooted

In the late 19th century, the Korean Empire wanted to work towards being a modern nation, so Emperor Gojong proceeded to establish a vocational school to offer education to the general population. In April 1910, a vocational school was established by formal decree (proclaimed in April 1909). This led to the launch of the first 2-year middle school, and the beginning of modern education.

In November 1911, the school was renamed the 'Jinju Public Agricultural School.' It expanded its influence by relocating in 1921. One more relocation was completed, in 1931, to the current site of the Chilam Campus (formerly Gyeongnam National University of Science and Technology).

Passionately kicked off toward higher education

With the liberation against Japanese Occupation, the name of school was changed for multiple times into Jinju Public Agricultural and Forestry School (March 1st, 1946), Jinju Public Middle School for Agriculture and Forestry (6-year course; August 31st, 1946) and Jinju Public High School for Agriculture and Forestry (August 31st, 1951). As promoted to the status of higher educational institution, the school has produced agricultural technicians for the Gyeongnam region.

Jinju was the center of local governance; the climate of the region was suitable for agriculture; and also the school, as an origin of agricultural education, was located there. Because of those merits, there was a groundswell of public opinion that demands for agricultural college in Jinju

Shortly after the independence from Japan, discussions for the agricultural college appeared, and which led to the formation of a committee to drive the establishment of the school. Thus, after 2 years, Gyeongnam Provincial Jinju Junior College of Agriculture was launched on October 20th, 1948. The part of Jinju Agricultural and Forestry School was rented to be used for a building of the college during its initial phase.

1960 - 1970
The growth awakened

Gyeongnam National University of Science and Technology

As the nationwide economic development since the implementation of the '1st 5-year Economic Development Plan' implemented in 1962, focus of educational policy has moved to securement of human resources who have technological competencies. By the transition in educational policy, in 1965, the status of Jinju High School for Agriculture and Forestry was promoted to high school with a 5-year course. The subject of jurisdiction was changed from public to the government in 1972, and then the status of school was promoted to junior college with 2-year course in 1973, with reform as Jinju Specialized School for Agriculture and Forestry. Afterwards, the dualized schools, both the junior college and the expertise school, were merged into Jinju Junior College of Agriculture and Forestry in January 1979.

Gyeongsang National University

In the mid-1960s, Korean society encountered a great and drastic reform in its structure, which had huge impacts on Gyeongnam Provincial Jinju Junior College of Agriculture as well. The subject of jurisdiction was changed from the province to the government on March 1st, 1968, and the school renamed as Gyeongsang National College on July 11th, 1972. After then, the name was changed once again to Gyeongsang National University as a general university in September 1979. The school's expansion in quantity and quality had been repeated until its status was promoted from agriculture-centered college to a comprehensive national university.

1980 - 1990
Leaped to embody the advanced education

Gyeongnam National University of Science and Technology

Difficulties in job seeking and preference for highly-educated candidates appeared in the 1980s and required new approaches to junior colleges. The circumstances led to a movement that demanded promotion of the school status to 4-year-course university, and the local community resonated with the campaign. As a result of that, the school became Jinju National University in March 1993.

Gyeongsang National University

The promotion of the general university was followed by expansion and relocation; the existing university at Chilam Campus moved to Gajwa Campus. With the introduction of the graduation quota system and increase in enrollment quota, the number of students rose significantly. In 1987, the university revised its regulations to prepare the foundation for democratic and autonomous operation. After merging Tongyeong Fisheries College into the College of Fisheries (College of Marine Science) of the university in 1995, the affiliated hospital became an independent corporation and was separated from the university.

2000 - 2010
Prepared for the new history

Gyeongnam National University of Science and Technology

The government revised the Higher Education Act to catch up with changes in the era and educational circumstances, and suggested special provisions for conversion from junior colleges to general university. The school, thus, prepared its transition to general university through activities by the University Restructuring Task Force in October 2009, and acquired the approval in February 2010. As a converted general university, the name of the school was changed to Gyeongnam National University of Science Technology on January 1st, 2011. The following restructuring works, which included reform in the academic organization based on choice-and-concentration strategy, scored Grade B (Superior) one year later in the restructuring assessment by the Ministry of Education in 2015.

Gyeongsang National University

As industry-academy cooperation has become significant in the society, in 2004, the university launched Industry-Academy Cooperation Foundation in a form of incorporation. At that same time, efforts were made to integrate with Changwon National University and also rename it as Gyeongnam National University. Newly established colleges and special graduate schools (such as Dept. of Pharmacy and Specialized Graduate School for Aerospace Engineering) in the 2010s expanded the scale of the university more, and the function as a research institute was reinforced as well. In addition, establishment of Changwon Industry-Academy Cooperation Campus was approved in August 2017, securing the bridgehead towards Changwon region.
