Gyeongsang National University Department of Chemistry
The Department of Chemistry, founded in 1980, is one of the most important science departments in Gyeongsang National University. She is in possess of a strong academic faculties, including 12 professors, 2 foreign chair professors, and 3 research professors. The Department of Chemistry takes on the tasks of training multi-level students such as postdoctoral fellows, doctors, postgraduates, and undergraduate students.
The undergraduate program of the Department of Chemistry is four-year length. The Department of Chemistry recruits 40 students per year since 2011. The aims of education to the undergraduates are to train personnel with good scientific accomplishment, solid chemical fundamentals, and elementary ability in research. Recently in order to realize these objectives we have reformed and optimized the course work program. In the last two or three semesters of the four academic years, all students have to accomplish their thesis via the high research-level experiments under the supervision of the duty professor. And undergraduate students have to get 130 credits including 66 credits for the major before graduation. Among the major courses, there are 38 credits to be required and 28 credits to be elective. However, students still have enough freedom to take elective course of the other subjects. Every year there are more than 50% undergraduate students go further studying for Master or Ph. D degrees.
During last 10 years or longer, the research activity in the Graduate School in Chemistry has been a successful model in the University. In this period, the whole department and some Department group members have been distinguished hosting most of the representative government-funded enterprises including BrainKorea(BK)21, World Class University (WCU), Basic Research Laboratory (BRL) programs and so on. Since 2002, the Graduate School in Chemistry is one of the core members of three specialty fields - biological science, mechanical/aerospace engineering and new nano materials which have been selected by the University as the research frontiers.
Based on above activities, the Department of Chemistry has become one of the most important bases for the chemical research and education not only in the southeast area of the country but also in the whole area of S. Korea. She had already been one of the top-10 chemistry departments in South Korea.
