Music Education

The Department of Music Education at Gyeongsang National University was established in March 1982 and has produced more than 900 graduates in 30 years, with the goal of cultivating educators who are holistic educators, who have a firm self philosophy, and who lead specialized education.

The purpose of the department is to cultivate the qualities of pre-service teachers through specialized programs, to cultivate professional skills through a systematic curriculum, and to cultivate social service, caring, and cooperation through various musical activities to foster excellent music teachers with sound character.

The Department of Music Education has secured four faculty members and excellent lecturers in each major to improve their professional skills through practical training in their majors for eight semesters, and to cultivate basic practical skills outside of their majors by completing various fields of study, including national musical instruments, as minors.

The curriculum is periodically reorganized to respond to the needs of the times, and it focuses on improving practical teaching skills through the theoretical background of music education and practical teaching methods, such as choral ensemble, singing, Korean music practical teaching method, long instrumental accompaniment method, music education theory, music textbook research and teaching method, and music education logic and essay.

In particular, in the 2013 academic year, the curriculum was newly reorganized so that students can obtain a nationally recognized certificate of cultural education history level 2.

In addition to the curriculum, we hold and support student concerts for each major to improve their practical skills, and we actively encourage them to participate in quartets, choirs, and ensembles.

These activities not only enhance the capabilities of majors but also serve as character education through on-campus and off-campus volunteer activities. The music therapy volunteer program at the psychiatric ward of Kyungpook National University Hospital is a representative example that has been going on since its inception.

Through this process, students develop a sense of caring and cooperation, which are essential as pre-service teachers, and set a future-oriented outlook and direction to pioneer their own career paths and foster human resources that are essential to the nation and society.

In order to provide a comfortable educational environment for students, the Music Education Department of the Arts Center is equipped with a sound absorbing building, a full air-conditioning and heating system, and a 400-seat concert hall, which has been recently remodeled with expanded lighting facilities and two Steinways, the highest quality grand pianos, and each classroom is equipped with a grand piano and each practice room is equipped with a practice piano.

The pianos are purchased and replaced annually from the department's budget, and there is a multimedia room with a studio and listening room equipped with teaching equipment and materials. After graduation, students can work as middle and high school music teachers, pianists, composers, singers, soloists, orchestra members, choir members, stage art specialists, music specialists, and cultural arts educators.
