Academic Characteristics

Environmental Engineering is an interdisciplinary field that comprehensively researches advanced treatment, water management, air pollution control, resource cycling, soil and ecosystem restoration, and climate change for environmental conservation and sustainable growth. Recently, the environmental engineering industry has evolved into an advanced sector, integrating information and communication technology, focusing on proactive responses to future environmental changes such as intelligent water treatment processes, smart water management, air quality improvement, biodiversity enhancement, greenhouse gas reduction, and climate change adaptation. It contributes to addressing diverse domestic and international environmental issues of the future and possesses an engineering-oriented, future-oriented nature to adapt to changes in the environmental industry structure and paradigms driven by the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

Industry Sector

The environmental-related industry has experienced rapid growth in recent years, with an average annual growth rate of 18.8%, driven by initiatives such as strengthened drinking water safety management, the introduction of water circulation policies, the expansion of the total atmospheric pollution quota system, the establishment of a resource circulation basic plan, the expansion of ecosystem restoration projects, and the adoption of greenhouse gas reduction goal management. It now accounts for 6.6% of the domestic GDP and has emerged as a promising industry for the future. There are 448 companies in the domestic environmental-related sector with annual revenues exceeding 10 billion KRW, and the estimated total revenue of the environmental industry is approximately 82.2 trillion KRW, categorizing it as an industry with the potential for sustained growth in the future.

Specialization

The Department of Environmental Engineering at Gyeongsang National University specializes in the top three domestic environmental industries (water, air, waste) and provides education in theory and practice to address food, energy, and environmental issues by integrating agricultural and energy engineering with the foundation of environmental engineering. Additionally, the department combines environmental monitoring, management, and conservation technologies with information and communication technology to achieve a pleasant environmental well-being, aiming to lead sustainable growth in the domestic environmental industry by creating new value.
