Polymer Engineering

Polymer Engineering is a field of study that researches the synthesis, processing, compositing, functionalization, and enhancement of materials.

Polymers are giant molecules whose length or weight can be hundreds of thousands or even millions of times greater than that of a water molecule. We can say that we are living in the age of polymers, as polymer materials such as plastics, fibers, rubber, adhesives, and paints are extensively used in daily life as well as in various industrial applications. Polymers are so ubiquitous that they are involved not only in basic science but also in chemical engineering, material engineering, and textile engineering. In 2002, for the first time among 16 domestic departments related to polymer engineering, the Accreditation Board for Engineering Education of Korea (ABEEK) was certified. In March 2006, it was selected for the second phase of the BK21 project (Brain Korea 21: IQube Project Group), receiving over 1 billion won per year for the next seven years to support graduate research. The Center for Industry-Academic Cooperation was launched in July 2009 and carried out a 5-year project to train professionals and provide field technical support for the industry. The Leading Industry-Academic Cooperation Universities (LINC Project Group) was launched in 2012 and has also been implementing a 5-year project to train professionals and support field technical sectors. Specialized areas such as organic semiconductors and display materials, recycling and environmental materials, and composite material evaluation have received top domestic rankings through vigorous research activities. They have secured research funds from the Ministry of Knowledge Economy's 21C Frontier Next-Generation Display Technology Development Project, Component Material Technology Development Project, the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology's Basic Research Project, and the Industrial Waste Recycling Technology Development Project, and are preparing to leap into becoming a world-class research group.
