Gyeongnam’s national flagship university representing Korea
Science Education Institute for the Gifted at GNU was established on October 5, 2004, as GNU won at a competition to be qualified to found it by Korea Science and Engineering Foundation (affiliated with the Ministry of Science and ICT). The foundation, renamed as Korea Foundation for the Advancement of Science & Creativity in 2009), also has been supporting operation of the institute according to the national talent development policy for science.
The institute's advanced courses have sub-major categories: mathematics/science major for elementary schoolers; physics/chemistry/bio-science/IT major for middle schoolers. In addition, mentorship education programs are provided separately for the gifted middle schoolers. As projects related to education for the gifted, the institute has conducting the following programs: Elementary/advanced/professional job-training course for teachers in gifted education (commissioned from Gyeongsangnamdo Office of Education; the professional course targets teachers from foreign countries including USA and Russia), 'School-visiting Science-in-Living Class' program (commissioned from Ministry of Education, Science and Technology; scored Grade S of assessment result in 2008 and 2009; operated on the largest scale among 51 institutes in Korea), 'Science Experience University' and 'Gyeongnam Science Festival' (commissioned from Gyeongsangnam-do), and etc.
