College of Medicine

The Medical College at Gyeongsang National University that is located in Jinju, a city of traditional culture and education, is a stronghold national medical college designated by the government, just celebrated its 38th anniversary as a backbone college of the nation. The College sets its mission as “fostering pioneering medical doctors with courtesy, wisdom, and learning” to contribute to the advancement of medicine and human health. It has an educational goal of fostering doctors with professional medical knowledge, medical treatment ability, self-development ability, and research ability with the qualities of a service spirit.
Established in 1983 with the hearts of pioneers, the College has made continous efforts to improve the quality of its education and academic affairs, and as a result, its rate of graduates passing the national exam for medical doctors is at the top in the country in spite of its short history. Furthermore, “Perfect Certification” was awarded to the College four times by the Korea Institute of Medical Education and Evaluation to serve as proof of its excellent education, research, and facilities.
Since its establishment in 1983, the College has opened 31 lecture rooms and graduate programs in 28 major subjects. From the year 1987 when the first graduates were produced until 2021, the 35th anniversary of the College, it has produced 2,638 medical doctors, 823 Masters of Medicine (MMed), 393 Doctors of Medicine (M.D.), and two Masters/Doctors of Medicine (combined degree). The alumni are working at research centers, local clinics, hospitals, and in medical administration as well as serving as professors at the College.
The College operates a 1,000-bed training hospital on 125,000m2 (38,000 pyeong) of land. The Gyeongnam Region Cancer Center was founded in 2007 as the first in the country. The Center operates cutting-edge equipment including the Cyberknife to diagnose and treat cancers of the local residents effectively. Also, the College established the Regional Cerebrovascular Center and the Southeast Rheumatism and Degenerative Arthritis Center. In the year 2016, Changwon Gyeongsang National University Hospital was founded to provide the best medical service to all the residents of Gyeongsangnam-do Province, advancing into the heart of the province beyond West Gyeongnam where the university is located. In addition, the Clinical Practicing Center is fully equipped with 10 PBL rooms and 12 clinical practice labs as well as a lecture building with multiple classrooms, MDL student practice labs, and a medical library. A dormitory having 190 rooms has been built to provide convenience to all the medical students.
The College started the design and basic construction for the expansion and renovation of the Medical Complex (5,551㎡) to accommodate cutting-edge advanced lecture rooms and labs in 2019. In January 2021, an additional extension to the building reaching 1,456㎡ was approved by the Ministry of Education to cultivate key personnel for public medical care to overcome infectious diseases including COVID-19 and to have enough space to operate an education program to strengthen future medical capabilities and fulfill social duties as a national college. It will be completed in 2023 having one basement floor and six floors above ground reaching 7,007㎡.
In terms of research, which is another important role of the college, the “Health Science Research Institute” accommodates a Cardiovascular Research Center, a Neuroscience Research Center, an Industrial Medical Research Center, a Research Center for the Health of the Elderly, a Cancer Research Center, and an Anti-Aging Research Center. In recognition of its research achievements, the Institute was designated as the key research organization by the Korea Research Foundation. Currently, the Institute is carrying out large-scale research projects such as the “Bio- Anti-Aging Medical Science Research Center (BAMRC)” and “Phase Four, BK21 Innovative Talent Cultivation Project.” Furthermore, in recognition of the College’s outstanding research capabilities, the “Regional Cancer Research Supporting Board” and “Korea Human Resources Stronghold Bank” were allocated to the College. Two-to-three students are assigned to one professor in operation of the “Student Guidance Program,” which is conducted in small groups in a friendly environment. The professors help guide the students in discovering their future vision through the program.
The College has been preparing for the Post-Corona era since 2020 to take a new leap forward. The College upgraded its curricula to enhance the public medical care of the local community and foster essential medical personnel, which we expect to be a bridgehead in realizing the social values as a national stronghold medical college. The team-based and computer-based curricula help the medical students strengthen their medical skills, making use of the space to research and analyze big data and artificial intelligence. With the aforementioned programs and facilities, the College is taking active steps to prevent the departure of talented people from Gyeongsangnam-do Province into the capital city region. As a result, our College, a national stronghold medical college, is a first-class medical college in Korea that cultivates medical personnel to lead the Next-Normal in the post-Corona era, promoting human health, contributing to creating a healthy society. The alumni of the College become competent, humane doctors who lead the Korean medical world with enhanced self-development and medical treatment ability.
