The Korean Language and Culture Center (Director Park Yong-sik, Professor of Korean Language and Literature) at Gyeongsang National University (GNU, President Kwon Jin-hoe) is holding a “Refining Our Language Contest,” which encourages participants to replace difficult foreign words, loanwords, and Sino-Korean terms with simpler Korean expressions.
The contest will run from April to October, selecting one word each month for participants to refine.
The Korean Language and Culture Center of Gyeongsang National University explained the purpose of the contest as follows:
“In everyday life, we often use difficult loanwords and Sino-Korean terms without much thought. This practice does not align with the intention of King Sejong, who created Hunminjeongeum so that people could communicate more easily. Through this contest, we aim to replace commonly used words that lack clear Korean alternatives with simpler Korean expressions. By doing so, we hope to reflect on the original purpose of the creation of Hangeul and improve the language environment of residents in Gyeongsangnam-do.”
The contest will be held from the second Wednesday of each month until the end of the month, and any resident of Gyeongsangnam-do is eligible to participate.
The “Word of the Month to Be Refined” can be found on the website of the Korean Language and Culture Center at Gyeongsang National University, and participants can submit their suggested expressions through Naver Form.
The word selected for April is “insight.” The term is often used in expressions such as “gain insight” or “draw insight.” Although it is frequently used these days, its meaning is not always easy to understand. This can be seen in the many online posts asking about the meaning of “insight,” along with numerous replies explaining the term. For this reason, the Korean Language and Culture Center at Gyeongsang National University has chosen “insight” as the word to be refined for April.
The contest period in April runs from the 8th to the 30th. Three people who propose intuitive, easy-to-understand words will be selected and awarded gift certificates (50,000 won, 30,000 won, 20,000 won).
