Professor Kang Seok-jin of Gyeongsang National University wins the 2026 Architectural Institute of Korea Paper Award

▸Awarded the Paper Award for research on environmental design for everyday safety in public rental apartments

Professor Kang Seok-jin of the Department of Architecture, College of Engineering, Gyeongsang National University (GNU; President Kwon Jin-hoe), and Park Seung-yeon (Ph.D. coursework completed) received the 2026 Architectural Institute of Korea (President Park Jin-cheol) Paper Award. The awards ceremony was held during the Spring Academic Conference and General Meeting, which took place April 28–30 at the aT Center in Seocho-gu, Seoul.

Founded in 1945, the Architectural Institute of Korea operates a society awards system (Grand Prize, Distinguished Service Award, Contribution Award, Paper Award, Special Award, Fund Award) at its annual general meeting each year. The Paper Award is presented to the authors of the best papers—one in each of seven fields, including planning, structure, construction, history, and architectural theory—selected from approximately 400 papers published in the previous year in the SCOPUS-indexed journal (Journal of the Architectural Institute of Korea) issued by the Architectural Institute of Korea.

Professor Kang Seok-jin and Park Seung-yeon were selected as recipients of the Paper Award in the architectural planning field for their study, "A Study on Environmental Design for Everyday Safety in Public Rental Apartments," in recognition of the excellence of research that proposed the concept and principles of environmental design for everyday safety combining Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) and Universal Design (UD) to prevent crime and improve residential conditions in public rental apartments inhabited by socially vulnerable groups.

Regarding this achievement, Professor Kang said, "Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design and Universal Design are the most important design theories in the living environment, and our research, which proceeded from the idea that combining the two could simultaneously enhance safety and convenience, was well received. Taking this opportunity, we plan to continue research on practical design standards and case development from the perspective of spatial welfare."

This paper is part of the results of the study "Development of BIM- and VR-based CPTED technologies and platform build-out for architectural practitioners," which is being conducted with support from the National Research Foundation of Korea, and Professor Kang's research team is devoted to broadening the base of research specialized in crime prevention in architectural and urban spaces and to the practical application of these technologies.
