From ‘Free Breakfast’ to ‘1,000-Won Dinner’… Tailored Welfare Programs Draw Attention
Gyeongsang National University: During the exam period, breakfast is free; dinner is 1,000 won.Student Council and University Administration to implement '1,000-won Dinner' following free breakfastIn the 2nd semester, the plan is to expand, in partnership with Jinju City, into a 'regional co-prosperity welfare model'.Gyeongsang National University (GNU; President Kwon Jin-hoe) Saebyeok General Student Council (President Oh Se-beom, 4th-year student in the Department of Urban Engineering) will implement the ‘1,000-Won Dinner’ program during the first-semester midterm exam period, in partnership with the university administration, to ease students’ meal costs and encourage their studies. This “1,000-Won Dinner” program will run for five days from April 20 to 24 at the Central 1 Cafeteria on the Gajwa Campus, limited to 400 people on a first-come, first-served basis. This initiative extends into the evening hours the positive purpose of the successfully established ‘천원의 아침밥’ program and the exam-period ‘무료 아침밥(아침의 행복)’, and was planned to support students who stay on campus studying until late, in recognition of the increasing meal-cost burden on university students in a period of high inflation. In particular, the decisive factors that enabled this project to get off the ground successfully were “comprehensive administrative and financial support at the university level” and “active cooperation from the Consumer Cooperative (hereinafter ‘Saenghyeop’),” as set out in the Saebyeok General Student Council’s plan that incorporated students’ demands. From securing the budget to designing the menu, it is a valuable outcome achieved through numerous working-level consultations among the University Administration, Saenghyeop, and student self-governing bodies. The '1,000-Won Dinner' program will begin with the 1st semester midterm exams and is expected to continue in the same manner during the final exam period. In particular, during the 2nd semester midterm and final exam periods, it will be expanded into a 'regional co-prosperity welfare model' by securing active budget support from Jinju City, with the local government and the university jointly promoting consumption of local rice and improving conditions for young people to settle in the region.Oh Se-beom, President of the Saebyeok General Student Council at Gyeongsang National University, said, “I am deeply grateful to the university administration and the Co-op staff who actively supported the implementation of this project,” adding, “I hope that during the exam period, students who study day and night can enjoy a warm, hearty dinner without worrying about meal costs and achieve good results.”Also, President Oh Se-beom emphasized, "Going forward, in addition to the '1,000-won Dinner' program, 새벽 총학생회 will continue to identify and implement practical welfare initiatives that students can tangibly feel."Meanwhile, Gyeongsang National University launched the '1,000-won breakfast' program in the first semester of 2023, recording high student participation and satisfaction, and beginning with the 2024 final-exam period it offered exam-period breakfasts for 'free,' drawing nationwide attention. In addition, through voluntary development-fund donations from Gyeongsang National University alumni and faculty and staff, the 1,000-won breakfast and free meal provision programs are gradually expanding, thereby realizing a 'student-satisfaction university' that attends to both students’ welfare and health. In the 2026 academic year, with support from the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, Gyeongsangnam-do, and Jinju-si, and including the university’s own funds, a project budget of 400 million won has been secured to run the 1,000-won Breakfast program from March 3 to December 18 (excluding vacations and public holidays) at Gajwa Campus (Central Cafeteria), Chilam Campus (Chilam Cafeteria), and Tongyeong Campus (Residence Hall Cafeteria).Photo description: The Saebyeok General Student Council of Gyeongsang National University (GNU), together with the university headquarters, is implementing the “1,000-Won Dinner” program to coincide with the first-semester midterm exam period. Korean Language Culture Center to replace difficult foreign words with easy Korean… Contest runs through October
Gyeongsang National University Institute for Korean Language and Culture to Host the 'Korean Language Refinement Contest'From April to October, held from the 2nd Wednesday of each month through the last day of the month.▸Select three people who suggested intuitive, easy-to-understand words and award gift certificates. The Korean Language and Culture Center (Director Park Yong-sik, Professor of Korean Language and Literature) at Gyeongsang National University (GNU, President Kwon Jin-hoe) is holding a “Refining Our Language Contest,” which encourages participants to replace difficult foreign words, loanwords, and Sino-Korean terms with simpler Korean expressions. The contest will run from April to October, selecting one word each month for participants to refine. The Korean Language and Culture Center of Gyeongsang National University explained the purpose of the contest as follows: “In everyday life, we often use difficult loanwords and Sino-Korean terms without much thought. This practice does not align with the intention of King Sejong, who created Hunminjeongeum so that people could communicate more easily. Through this contest, we aim to replace commonly used words that lack clear Korean alternatives with simpler Korean expressions. By doing so, we hope to reflect on the original purpose of the creation of Hangeul and improve the language environment of residents in Gyeongsangnam-do.” The contest will be held from the second Wednesday of each month until the end of the month, and any resident of Gyeongsangnam-do is eligible to participate. The “Word of the Month to Be Refined” can be found on the website of the Korean Language and Culture Center at Gyeongsang National University, and participants can submit their suggested expressions through Naver Form. The word selected for April is “insight.” The term is often used in expressions such as “gain insight” or “draw insight.” Although it is frequently used these days, its meaning is not always easy to understand. This can be seen in the many online posts asking about the meaning of “insight,” along with numerous replies explaining the term. For this reason, the Korean Language and Culture Center at Gyeongsang National University has chosen “insight” as the word to be refined for April. The contest period in April runs from the 8th to the 30th. Three people who propose intuitive, easy-to-understand words will be selected and awarded gift certificates (50,000 won, 30,000 won, 20,000 won).
